Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar will have to endure another seven Premier League games without conceding a goal to claim the world record for the longest clean sheet in the history of domestic football.

Abel Resino's stint of 1,275 goalless minutes for Atletico Madrid was widely accepted as the best ever, a mark van der Sar will pass if he keep Fulham at for 64 minutes on Wednesday night.

However, it has emerged that Club Brugge 'keeper Dany Verlinden went some 1,390 minutes without picking the ball out of his net in 1990, making him the European record holder.

But The Daily Star reports that neither Verlinden nor Resino can hold a candle to Brazil's Mazaropi, who went unbeaten for an astonishing 1,816 minutes with Vasco da Gama between May 1977 and September 1978.

Hence, van der Sar must keep his sheet clean until April 4 to set a new world record, a stretch that encompasses crunch clashes with Liverpool and Aston Villa.

The Dutchman can top Verlinden's European mark at the weekend, though, should he ship nothing against the Cottagers and keep out Blackburn Rovers for at least 89 minutes.
